The Cummer Museum is truly a treasure in Jacksonville. Formally a wealthy family home, it has since transformed into J’ville’s most iconic haute culture centerpiece.
Established in 1961, the museum and adjacent gardens are a brilliant way to spend the afternoon. Admission is nominal and reduced rates are available to veterans, children and students (provided they have credentials, i.e. student ID). The outdoor gardens face the majesty of St. John’s River at her maximum berth. When the weather is calm, from the garden rampart one can see all the way to Clay County.
The artworks contained in the museum date back to 2100 B.C.E. But the museum stores more than just ancient art, the front entrance is shadowed by a neo-contemporary piece consisting of two large red circles. The Cummer really brings together old and modern into a coherent, artistic whole.
